4 Comments | I am a high school senior, and I created this painting which has taken on a meaning that I hope will raise money for those affected by the disastrous BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. I named this painting “Strung out on Oil” because Americans, as a whole, are dependent on oil for many things. In the US Gulf coast region, several states' industries heavily rely on the Gulf's resources, including not only fisheries and tourism, but also oil production. As of July 15 , 2010, an estimated 92 million gallons of oil have gushed into the Gulf. http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/2010/05/how-much-oil-has-spilled-in-the-gulf-of-mexico.html I hope to make a difference with your help. Although the spill will have many long-term effects, you can help in the short-term by purchasing a t-shirt for $25.00, which includes shipping & handling (U.S. addresses only). 50% of all proceeds are being donated to the Greater New Orleans Foundation's Gulf Coast Oil Spill Fund ( http://www.gnof.org/about/ ) , benefiting victims directly affected by the BP Gulf oil spill. Together we can make a difference.

Monday, September 20, 2010 at 12:28AM Thank you for helping folks as a result of the April 20 explosion that killed 11 workers, sank a drilling rig and led to the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history. The disaster has caused an environmental and economic nightmare for people who live, work and play along hundreds of miles of Gulf shoreline. Gulf residents will be feeling the pain for years to come. Many people are still struggling to make ends meet with some waters still closed to fishing. Shrimpers who are allowed to fish are finding it difficult to sell their catch because of the perception that the seafood is not safe to eat.
Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at 01:09AM "Strungout on Oil" has many meanings. At this gas station in Florida, it appears that this location has been "strung out" by the unofficial boycott of many BP gas stations. As you can see, the bays are almost completely empty, and there is a "For Lease" sign out front. Sadly, this business owner is also a victim of this oil spill, through no fault of his own.
This is my Dad, not the owner of the station.
Monday, September 6, 2010 at 11:31PM With an estimated 5 million barrels of oil spilled, the BP Deepwater Horizon Rig catastrophe has now become the largest spill ever. The previous holder of the record was the Bay of Campeche spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 1979, in Mexican waters. The Exxon Valdez spill of March 1989 in Alaskan waters was 257,000 barrells. An interesting website that addresses the Valdez spill and it's lingering environmental impact might provide some insight on the battle that lies ahead for the Gulf coast.

Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at 03:11PM BP claims today that the "static kill" was a success, and that no more oil should escape from the well. There are varying reports on the total amount of oil that was spilled, from 92 million gallons to over 200 million gallons. There are some reports from BP and our government that perhaps only 26% of the oil is left to be collected or to wash up on our shores. I question how they came up with the 26% figure, when there is such a wide range on the estimate of the total spill. Let's hope that they are right, and that the corner has been turned on the environmental front.
